Argentina's Supreme Court Upholds Life Sentence for Guard's Murder

The Supreme Court has upheld the life sentence for Italo Ariel “Cebolla” Romeo for the murder of guard Pablo Liendo and the serious injuries caused to Martín Gómez during a frustrated robbery in 2016, according to the Argentine News Agency.

The incident occurred on May 12, 2016, when two guards transporting an employee of a financial firm were intercepted in Remedios de Escalada by at least three thieves looking to steal a bag with checks. Liendo was shot in the head and died, while Gómez was wounded in the shoulder blade, although the robbers fled without carrying out the robbery.

The investigation led to the arrest of Romeo, who was accused of being a member of a violent group linked to Independiente in another case, and Pablo Luis Russo. Romeo was accused of “homicide during a robbery with a firearm and attempted murder,” while Russo was identified as an accomplice and also responsible for a false complaint.

In 2022, Romeo was sentenced to life in prison and Russo to 17 years in prison. The Buenos Aires Appeals Court confirmed the sentences, and then the provincial Supreme Court rejected a motion from the defense. The filing with the Supreme Court argued arbitrariness, excess of formal rigor, and violation of constitutional guarantees, but it was dismissed for failing to comply with the formalities established in the ruling 4/2007.

With this ruling, the life sentence for Romeo becomes final.
